Tunein Affirmations is an application that promotes the Affirmations Audio Listening Experience.

Based on the client's demand,
This research focuses on evaluating the ease with which users discover and customize their affirmation listening experience with the help of the features present in the app. Determine the need for features that would enhance their experience and make it more seamless and evaluate the understandability of the gestures and toggles built into the app to navigate the various features that would help with the customizations to cater to unique listening needs.

Introduction

App overveiw

Tune In Affirmations is an app designed for customizable listening to positive affirmations. Users can customize affirmation categories, affirmations within each category, background music or “ambiance,” binaural beats, and other features related to the listening experience.

Client's Demand Overview

  1. Evaluate if users could discover and customize their affirmation listening experience with the help of the features present in the app.

  2. Evaluate the understandability of the gestures, focus area to navigate the various features that would help with the customizations to cater to unique listening needs.

Team

My team was formed by talented UX designers and researchers: Shivani Kolte, Mariah Hill, and me.

In collocation with the team, we conducted usability tests using moderated user testing, while zoom as the user testing platform. Six users participated in tasks designed to reveal discoverability and customizability of features within the application, as well as areas for improvement.

My Role in the Team

My role in this project included designing, recruiting, and filtering participants, moderating user tests based on client concerns, analyzing test data and consolidating it into graphical illustrations. After that, differentiating major and minor findings. Synthesizing follow-up recommendations into the usability report, and building the presentation while concluding report contents to the client.

Screening Participants

To meet the client's needs, I made a list of screening questions to find a target audience that matched the most with a high frequency of consuming mental wellness content,  familiar with such digital interface and non-UX experience. 6 from 16 participants were selected.

Preparing User Test

Before conducting User tests, users were asked to complete a 10-question survey about their familiarity with consuming audio affirmations content, where I designed those questions for users' demographics and possible modification after each user test.

Demographics

From test questions, I ensure participants share the same patterns of familiarity with audio content while having their diversity to keep our user tests' breadth.

Moderated User Testing

After completing the pre-test questions, each user is asked to complete 4 tasks, mostly related to investigating the discoverability and customizability of f0cus area features and listening area features.

Moderated User Testing

Example of Users discovering focus area

Example of Users customizing listening area

While conducting User Tests, in the sessions I moderated, users were highly encouraged to "think around" for gathering our findings.

Data Analysis

The user test reveals several usability issues with the interface and we noted and compiled them within one rainbow sheet, I consolidated and concluded the total count from each of the user tests to address which findings are mostly addressed and which are less. Then our team ranks the findings accordingly.

Findings

Overall findings

Users liked the simplicity of the listening area and changing colors, visuals

Users liked different audio offerings

Users  appreciated and were pleasantly surprised by the different customization features

App performed as expected, but customization features and toggles were not discoverable and/or usable due to feedback or design choices

The Focus area contains too much content that is not immediately understandable

We generated the four problems accordingly from the rainbow sheet.

Recommendations

For recommendations, our team utilized figma as the tool for mockups.

Recommendation 1.1&1.2

Eliminated the small button on the bottom right of the bar to make the affirmations list accessible with a single click on the ‘focus area'.

A clear indication of selection and deselection by enhancing the feedback through checkboxes around the ticks and introducing selection options through the checkbox dropdown.

Recommendation 2.1&2.2

The short press following the long press not matching
the users’ expectation of the multiselection function.

We changed the first long press select the first category and the following single presses add to that multiple selections.

Highlighting the ‘focus area’ to inform the user of which affirmation belongs to which focus area while multiple are selected.

Recommendation 3

Content titles are irrelevant with content and the text description length was heavy. We made the change of showcases more descriptive titles and descriptions that fit within the focus area title.

Recommendation 4

Allows the user to navigate to the ambiance and binaural beats list via clearly clickable links above the sound control bars, like the open a folder option.

Overall feedback

The feedback for this study we received from Nick, our client, was very positive, he was impressed with our usability problem findings and recommendations. For the next step, as he suggested, the application does need more engagement experience and making discoverability, and customization features more intuitive will be implemented for the next version of the application.

If I were to continue, conducting another feasible user tests based on our mockups will be crucial to ensure if the recommendation hits the target users' demands.
